white residue

Postby yanyan » Tue May 17, 2016 6:14 am

Hello All,
I'm a newbie to both the hobby and the forum.
I have been casting bas relief sculptures using a silicone mould and clay original artwork.
After burnishing the (bronze) resin casts with steel wool and then detailing with boot polish, I notice a white residue trapped in amongst the intricate parts of the artwork. A damp cloth takes the residue away from the prominent parts, but it is tricky to shift in the crevices etc.
Questions for the forum;
1) Can anyone tell me what causes the white residue?
2) What's the best way to shift it permanently from the artwork?

Many thanks!

Why are you burnishing the resin? I would think it might be pieces of the resin brushed off. Perhaps a tooth brush to get I the cracks?

Can I get a pic per chance?

I burnish the resin to buff up the bronze flake - other wise it looks like a chocolate bar.
I think it may be residue from the steel wool. I'm going to try warm water and a toothbrush / nail brush. I'm sure that will do the trick.
I don't know how to post a picture on here; sorry.
Thank you for your response.
