Is it time to update the forum?

Postby mangozac » Thu Mar 15, 2012 7:42 pm

Hi guys,

You all know how happy I am with the community that we're developing here and I want nothing more than for us to continue the way we are going. Those who know me well also know that I'm more partial to traditional scratchbuilding techniques: fabricating (by hand or machine) individual parts to be blended together into a final model. But even I cannot ignore the continual advances in 3D printing and how it is changing the miniatures design landscape before our eyes.

Just 2.5 years ago when I founded Resin Addict 3D printed models were still a rare and expensive commodity so nobody really took a lot of notice of them. In just that short period of time though things have changed rapidly and I will be surprised if these "rapid prototyping" techniques aren't the norm in the very near future.

With that in mind I think it may be time to do a bit of housekeeping in the Resin Addict forums to reflect this changed landscape. As you may have noticed we have a new subforum in "the Clinic" dedicated to 3D modelling and 3D printing, but I don't want it to feel like I'm shoving you 3D guys (who I think actually outnumber the traditional guys!) into that corner to play. Should the "Dr Polymer" subforum perhaps be broken into traditional and 3D modelling?

Also, I'm finding that we're starting to get a lot of informational threads in Dr Polymer which are cluttering that subforum up a bit. I'm thinking we need to make better use of the "Advisory" subforum and move all of the tutorials into there. It should probably be moved up near the top of the forum too so that it's obvious to newcomers that that is where to look.

What do you think guys? This is as much your forum as it is mine! I'm open to suggestions so please post them!
Oh yeah I can make that....

It's very cool that you are open to the idea of changing things. As for me, I like the way you set up the 3D area.

Only other thing I might suggest is merging "Advisory" into "Dr. Polymer", they seem similar to me, and then throwing 3D up where "Advisory" was.

Either way, I'm loving what I see here and it's cool to watch how it grows a little larger every so often.

I agree on the merge of advisory and Dr polymer, then just pin the good threads to the top?

Thanks guys!

The problem with pinning the important threads is that there is a lot of them (many more than are pinned at the moment) and I can see them taking up the whole first page. So perhaps we rearrange as follows:

Dr Polymer
- Advisory subforum
- 3D subforum

The 3D subforum will be left where it is in the clinic for discussion of actual 3D modelling projects.

Finally, is there something more appropriate that we should call 3D modelling? I mean technically all hobby work in 3D modelling - it's the computer 3D modelling and 3D printing we're interested in here ;)
Oh yeah I can make that....

Not silly at all - but you've answered my question: it's called Digital Modelling!
